The scholarship carries the name of Daniel J. Beky, who spent more than four decades in law enforcement in northeastern Pennsylvania. He began as a patrolman in Kingston Borough in 1974 and rose to become Assistant Chief in 1998 and Chief of Police in 2002, before serving as a detective for Luzerne County. His career is remembered as one defined by professionalism and a genuine commitment to the communities he served.

“Police work was such a passion for Dan and with 45 years of experience, I wanted to find a way to honor and memorialize him. He could always find the passion in others who want to become police officers. With the academy being in both Lackawanna County and Luzerne County, I thought it came together as a perfect fit and a great way to give back,” said April Beky, Dan Beky’s wife and event organizer.

The inaugural Scranton Class 266 recipients are Jeffrey Alvarado, Mohamed Elkadousy, and Ariel Kellam. Additional scholarship opportunities are available this year for Hazleton Class 267 cadets.

“Dan was driven and passionate, and when cadets apply for the scholarship they’ll read about his work. I hope they take a little bit of him with them as they go out and become safe, well-trained police officers. That’s what I want this scholarship to help achieve,” said Beky.

The scholarship fund grows each year through the clay shoot. The inaugural event raised close to $17,000, and this year’s shoot is scheduled for September 18, 2026. Funds raised will determine how many scholarships are awarded in 2027. Beyond tuition support, the program is also designed to help graduating cadets cover the cost of uniforms and equipment they’ll need when they begin serving their communities.

“I hope we continue to get bigger and better every year and get more people excited about supporting the program. We always need law enforcement, and I want to thank everyone who participated, donated, and contributed to making our first event such a success. Every little bit counts,” said Beky.

鈥淚 have had a love affair with Nunsense since I first saw the off-Broadway production in 1985,鈥� said Misko, who directed the first non-Equity production of Nunsense in the world in Carbondale and has performed as Rev. Mother more than 150 times. 鈥淎nd it鈥檚 always special to direct and perform in the show. To mount a Nunsense production alongside my closest friends in a space like the People鈥檚 Security Theater all while supporting higher education is a dream come true.鈥�

How Nourishing Neighbors Works

The program works through collaboration across the College community. Culinary students prepare nutritious meals for pre-selected area families, while volunteers from 久久福利国产 and local school districts help package and deliver the food alongside Police Academy cadets. Beyond feeding families in need, the program is designed to build trust between law enforcement and local residents. The Scranton Counseling Center refers families to the College to participate.

鈥淧rograms like Nourishing Neighbors give cadets a perspective they don鈥檛 always get in a traditional classroom setting. They see the challenges families are facing up close, and they realize that policing isn鈥檛 just about reacting to crime; it鈥檚 also about public service and building cooperation. The program humanizes law enforcement for citizens, who may only have contact with a police officer when something traumatic happens in their lives,鈥� said Mahoney.

A Growing Program

Since its launch, Nourishing Neighbors has grown steadily. Volunteer hours increased 80 percent year-over-year, from 100 hours in Spring 2024 to 180 hours in Spring 2025. The number of families served rose 36 percent over the same period, from 16 families in 2024 to 25 in 2025. Over four years, the program increased its annual total number of meals delivered by 36 percent, from 400 meals in Spring 2021 to 630 meals in Spring 2025.

鈥淔ood prices can rise and fall, but thanks to M&T Bank鈥檚 support, we can still provide fully prepared, home-cooked meals to residents in need in our community,鈥� said Bauman. 鈥淥ur culinary students can continue preparing the full range of meals they need to learn and nothing gets pulled from the menu due to cost. It means we can give students a complete culinary education while still producing great meals for those in need.鈥�

Looking Ahead in 2026

For the remainder of 2026, 久久福利国产 aims to provide 650 meals, grow community awareness of the program, and expand its volunteer base among College staff and students. The College also plans to develop a Recipe & Resource binder for participating families, with practical information on healthy cooking and nutrition.

Pilotta was selected for the position through Living Sport, an experiential education company that provides hands-on programs at major sporting events like the Super Bowl, World Cup, and Olympics to help students launch careers in the sports business industry.

Pilotta met the Living Sport team at MetLife Stadium during a New York Jets football game, where she spoke with the company’s founder, Alicia Marinelli. During their discussion, Pilotta learned she would join a team of 15 students managing behind-the-scenes aspects of the Super Bowl. Her responsibilities will include posting on Living Sport’s social media channels, working on the sidelines, and assisting the broadcast media team.

“I went home that night and told my parents that I was interested. I couldn’t pass up this opportunity. I submitted my resume almost immediately,” Pilotta said. “A few months later, I was in room 409 on Adams when I got the letter that I was accepted. It was so exciting, I couldn’t believe it.”

久久福利国产 supported Pilotta’s application by covering her application fee, enabling her to pursue this opportunity in the sports industry.

“I am very grateful to 久久福利国产 for paying for my application. It means a lot that I get to go to the Super Bowl and do something I am interested in,” Pilotta said.

Pilotta is a senior earning her bachelor’s degree in the Restaurant & Foodservice Management program. She also serves as a sports photographer for the college, and when she’s home in Long Island, New York, she works as a media manager for two teams in a pro-am league.

“My dream is to open a sports-themed hotel one day, but with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I may need to put that on hold if I can start a career in sports media,” Pilotta said. “I’ll be learning how to collect data, how to broadcast on live TV, and learn the effort that is needed to run an event like the Super Bowl.”

Coming Spring 2026: Three New Locations

After receiving approval from the Middle States Commission of Higher Education, 久久福利国产 will open three new satellite centers in:

鈥� Bethlehem, PA
鈥� Chambersburg, PA
鈥� Greensburg, PA

These three new satellite centers expand access to 久久福利国产’s technical education and manufacturing programs in communities throughout southern and western Pennsylvania.

Programs That Meet Demand

All three locations will offer a new associate degree for the college in welding and fabrication technology. The Bethlehem center will offer new associate degrees in carpentry and construction technology as well as an electrical technology program. The Greensburg center will launch its electrical technology program in the fall 2026 semester.

鈥淭here is increasing need across Pennsylvania for highly skilled workers in key trades, including welding, electrical, construction and carpentry. The program provides students with alternative routes to graduation by offering industry certification courses meeting Pennsylvania’s Act 158 requirements. Under Pennsylvania’s Act 158, students can meet graduation requirements by either passing standardized tests or demonstrating career readiness through industry certifications.

鈥淭he grant from the McGowan Foundation allows 久久福利国产 to offer pathways to meet Pennsylvania graduation requirements and provide experience and certifications to transition into college or employment after high school,鈥� said Abbey Judge, Pre-College Programs Director and Title IX Deputy Coordinator. 鈥淓ligible students can choose to enroll in college classes or an industry certification program. Initiatives like this not only align with the College’s mission but also strengthen our existing relationships with local school districts.鈥�

Building a Competitive Advantage for Students

The program connects participating high school students with opportunities to complete industry certifications in various fields while earning their high school diploma. Students who complete both requirements gain a competitive advantage whether they choose to pursue higher education or enter the workforce directly after graduation. The program aims to increase high school graduation rates and strengthen the local workforce in Northeast Pennsylvania while providing students with multiple pathways to success after high school.

By removing financial barriers to certification programs, the grant ensures students from all backgrounds can access these career-building opportunities. This agreement, signed in April 2025, is planned to be offered to Bloomsburg Area High School students starting summer 2025 and continuing through the 2025-2026 academic year.

鈥淲e love to offer our students opportunities to take classes at the college level, and 久久福利国产 is very flexible with our teachers teaching the courses,鈥� said Amy Melchiorre, Director of Curriculum and Instruction & Grant Writing, Bloomsburg Area School District.

A Focus on Cybersecurity

Along with the general education courses from the college, a goal of this agreement is to offer 久久福利国产鈥檚 Cybersecurity program, allowing Bloomsburg students to take cybersecurity classes online.

鈥淐ybersecurity is a growing force and many of our students have expressed interest. We want to give them the opportunity to explore this field while they are still in high school,鈥� said Andrea Landis, Ed.D., Bloomsburg Area High School Principal.

Through the partnership, Bloomsburg students will have access to 久久福利国产鈥檚 fully online Cybersecurity program, which is designed as a two-year associate degree. The program dives into core areas of computer science, including information technology, operational technology, and cybersecurity, all aimed at preparing students to tackle real-world cyber threats.

For students and families, this program offers practical benefits. Earning college credit in high school can help students make progress toward a degree while potentially reducing future college costs. It also gives students a chance to explore academic interests before graduating.
